Hardware Design Engineer
Marvell TechnologyJob Title
Hardware Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design, implement, and bring up complex high-speed PCBs and networking platforms that integrate silicon, packaging, and optics into deployable board and switch solutions. Work with circuit design, packaging, SI/PI, and system validation teams to meet performance, quality, and schedule objectives.
Position involves hands-on lab bring-up, vendor and contract manufacturer engagement, and leadership of hardware engineers and technicians. Role may require eligibility for access to export-controlled technology.
Experience Level
Senior level. Typical experience: 10–15 years for candidates with a Bachelor's degree; 5–10 years for candidates with a Master's or PhD.
Responsibilities
The core responsibilities include technical leadership, board design execution, coordination with cross-functional teams, and hands-on debugging and validation.
- Lead design and development of complex high-speed boards, switches, and optics platforms.
- Own PCB schematic capture, layout, and board bring-up processes to meet technical and schedule targets.
- Plan and organize board builds, component procurement, bring-up, debug, and testing.
- Drive system-level decisions on power, thermal, signal integrity, and reliability with SI/PI and packaging teams.
- Lead small hardware teams and technicians to deliver boards to internal and external customers.
- Coordinate with design, software, validation, marketing, and field teams on board requirements and status.
- Work with PCB vendors, ODMs, and contract manufacturers to ensure manufacturability and quality.
- Perform hands-on lab bring-up and debug using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related test equipment.
- Review customer designs, lead root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
- Identify board design risks across the platform and develop mitigation or escalation plans.
Requirements
Technical must-haves and practical skills required for the role. Education-related requirements are summarized below in Education Requirements.
- Must-have: Direct experience with high-speed and high-density PCB design including high-speed serial and memory interfaces (examples: DDR3/4/5, PCIe Gen3/4/5, SATA3, SPI, I2C).
- Proven experience leading small teams of design engineers from concept through production.
- High-speed routing experience (PAM4, DDR5, PCIe Gen5) and routing strategy expertise.
- Experience with Cadence Allegro or OrCAD schematic capture and PCB layout tools.
- Working knowledge of signal integrity and power integrity concepts (decoupling, AC impedance targets, crosstalk, insertion/return loss).
- Experience with large board formats, layer-count design, stack-up optimization, and power-supply design with measurement experience.
- Hands-on use of advanced test equipment (sampling/real-time oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) for bring-up and debug.
- Understanding of mechanical and thermal considerations for high-density layouts.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, debugging, verbal, and written communication skills; sense of urgency and accountability.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 10–15 years of relevant professional experience; or a Master's degree and/or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 5–10 years of relevant professional experience.
