Job Title

GPU Backend Compiler Engineer

Role Summary

Work on NVIDIA's GPU compiler backend to generate high-performance machine instructions for graphics and compute workloads. The role sits on a compiler engineering team collaborating closely with hardware and application teams to implement code generation, scheduling, and optimization for parallel SIMT architectures.

Team focus: backend code generation, compiler passes, optimizations, and support for Graphics (OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX) and Compute (CUDA, PTX, OpenCL, Fortran, C++).

Experience Level

Mid-level. The posting requests approximately 3+ years of compiler code generation experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include implementing and improving the compiler backend and working with adjacent teams to resolve issues and ship high-quality code.

  • Understand, modify, and improve an NVIDIA proprietary GPU compiler backend written in C++.
  • Design and develop compiler passes and optimizations for code generation and performance.
  • Collaborate with global compiler, hardware, and application teams to diagnose and resolve problems.
  • Contribute to compiler technology that spans architecture support and front-end language integration.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for immediate contribution.

  • 3+ years of compiler code generation experience.
  • Excellent hands-on C++ programming skills.
  • Strong software engineering practices focused on robustness and maintainability.
  • Good communication and documentation skills; self-motivated and able to work across teams.

Nice-to-have:

  • M.S. or PhD with significant compiler-related project or thesis work (preferred).
  • Experience with LLVM code generation components: instruction scheduling, software pipelining, register allocation, GlobalISel, TableGen, LLVM IR, Machine IR (MIR).
  • Experience developing CUDA, DirectX, OpenGL, or Vulkan applications.

Education Requirements

B.S. or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field is listed as expected; equivalent practical experience accepted. M.S. or PhD in a related field is preferred for stronger candidates.
