Functional Safety Manager

Role Summary

Lead and manage functional safety activities across semiconductor and IP development projects for avionics, automotive, and industrial customers. Act as the technical authority for safety processes, safety evidence collection, and safety lifecycle gatekeeping to deliver safety-rated devices, tools, and IP.

The role partners with engineering, product, customers, and external assessors to ensure compliance with ISO 26262, IEC 61508, and related standards and to support audits and certification efforts.

Experience Level

Responsibilities

Primary duties and cross-functional activities expected for the role.

  • Lead and coordinate functional safety activities across programs, ensuring adherence to ISO 26262, IEC 61508, and other applicable standards.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement project-specific functional safety plans and tailor processes as required.
  • Collect and collate safety evidence from internal teams and external stakeholders to build safety packages and safety cases.
  • Manage safety assessments and analyses, including FMEDA, FTA, DFA, and Safety Case documentation.
  • Schedule and conduct confirmation reviews and act as gatekeeper for safety lifecycle phases to ensure compliance with milestones.
  • Coordinate third-party audits and assessments and liaise with certification bodies and customers.
  • Train and mentor engineering teams on safety standards, processes, and best practices.
  • Provide customer-driven feedback into product safety roadmaps and recommend safety architectures for projects.
  • Support continuous improvement of safety processes, tools, and organizational capability.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred qualifications, excluding degree items (see Education Requirements below).

  • Must-have: 8+ years' experience in functional safety within the semiconductor industry with strong focus on ISO 26262 or IEC 61508 and safety-critical applications.
  • Must-have: Hands-on experience producing safety artifacts such as Safety Cases, Safety Management Plans, and Safety Manuals.
  • Must-have: Proven leadership managing cross-functional teams and safety-critical projects.
  • Preferred / Nice-to-have: Experience with ISO 26262 certification processes.
  • Preferred / Nice-to-have: Familiarity with automotive quality standards (IATF 16949, VDA 6.3) and cybersecurity standards (ISO 21434, IEC 62443).
  • Preferred / Nice-to-have: Experience with DO-254, MIL-STD safety processes, FPGA/ASIC/SoC architecture and verification, and AS9100 QMS.
  • Preferred / Nice-to-have: Safety certifications such as FSCP or TÜV FS Professional.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. Safety-related certifications (for example, FSCP, TÜV FS Professional) are listed as preferred. (No equivalent-experience language stated.)
