Functional Safety Intern - Spring 2027
Role Summary
Work with NXP's Functional Safety Competence Centre to support safety architecture, analysis, and documentation for automotive and industrial SoC products. The intern will assist experienced safety architects and engineers on safety engineering tasks across IP, subsystem, and platform levels.
Tasks include contributing to safety analyses, safety work products, and integration of safety IP and architecture into semiconductor products while collaborating with design, verification, software, and systems teams.
Experience Level
Entry-level (Internship). Position is for a current graduate student; intended as a short-term engineering internship.
Responsibilities
Support the FuSa CC team by contributing to safety engineering activities for IPs, subsystems, and SoC platforms.
- Help define and document safety requirements aligned with ISO 26262 and IEC 61508.
- Support development of functional safety concepts and safety architecture solutions.
- Contribute to safety analyses such as FMEDA, FTA, DFA, and fault-injection planning.
- Prepare safety work products for assessments and audits and assist in reviewing safety documentation.
- Collaborate with design, verification, software, and systems teams to understand and validate safety mechanisms.
- Support integration of safety IPs into automotive and industrial products.
- Participate in process improvements, automation, and development of safety engineering methods.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and capabilities for day-to-day internship tasks.
- Must-have: Strong understanding of digital design fundamentals, computer architecture, microcontrollers, or SoC design concepts.
- Exposure to embedded systems, hardware/software interaction, or semiconductor development.
- Basic understanding of functional safety concepts and interest in automotive safety standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a cross-functional, global engineering team.
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with ISO 26262/IEC 61508 artifacts and safety analysis techniques (FMEDA, FTA, DFA), fault-injection experience, or scripting/automation for process improvement.
Education Requirements
Currently pursuing a Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, Automotive Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline. Candidates must be returning to school or graduating at the conclusion of the internship term; applicants graduating before May 2027 should apply to entry-level full-time roles.
