FPGA Technical Manager
Role Summary
Lead and manage a team of FPGA designers and design-verification engineers to deliver complex FPGA-centric designs on schedule and within cost. The role combines technical leadership on architecture, design, implementation, and verification with program responsibility for schedule, staffing, scope and risk management.
Experience Level
Senior-level β typically 10+ years of relevant engineering experience in FPGA/ASIC design and team leadership.
Responsibilities
Accountable for technical and program delivery across FPGA development activities. Key duties include:
- Manage and mentor FPGA design and design-verification teams.
- Define and review architecture, design scope and implementation approaches.
- Plan and manage schedule, staffing, cost, scope and technical risk; track earned value.
- Ensure engineering best practices for requirements management, RTL development, verification, synthesis and timing closure.
- Coordinate cross-discipline integration, lab bring-up and system validation.
- Detect and mitigate events that could impact schedule, cost, or performance.
- Communicate technical status and tradeoffs to program stakeholders.
Requirements
Must-have technical and leadership qualifications; preferred items noted separately.
- 10+ years of relevant FPGA/ASIC engineering and team leadership experience.
- Current U.S. security clearance (Secret or higher), or eligibility to obtain one.
- Proven track record delivering complex FPGA-centric designs and managing engineering teams.
- Deep understanding of FPGA architecture and design tradeoffs.
- Experience across FPGA/ASIC lifecycle: requirements management, RTL design, verification, synthesis, timing analysis, and lab bring-up/validation.
- Proficiency in VHDL (preferred) or Verilog; familiarity with AMD Vivado/Vitis or Intel/Altera Quartus.
- Experience planning and managing schedule, staffing, cost, and program risks.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to mentor junior engineers.
- Proficient with MS-Project, MS-Word, and MS-Excel.

Nice-to-have: Matlab/DSP fundamentals, C/C++ software skills, scripting (Perl, Python, bash, Tcl), exposure to UVM/OVM, Earned Value Management, DoD project experience.
Education Requirements
Required: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (EE), Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) or closely related technical field. Preferred: Master's degree in EE/ECE or a technical MBA.
