FPGA Software Design Engineer (Internship)

Role Summary

The intern will develop embedded software, DevOps tooling, and data-visualization or demo applications that enable FPGA-based systems. Work will be performed in an Agile engineering team, delivering features from specification through verification and release.

This is a 13-month fixed-term industrial placement based at Altera Europe HQ in Marlow, United Kingdom, intended for university students on an approved placement year.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship for university students (suitable for 2nd or 3rd-year students on an industrial placement year). No prior commercial experience required.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the full development lifecycle of FPGA-based software systems from concept to release.
  • Design and implement software user interfaces for FPGA demo systems used at trade shows.
  • Develop optimized application software for proof-of-concept and demo designs.
  • Implement embedded software drivers and board support package components.
  • Apply DevOps practices to automate builds, tests, and infrastructure workflows.
  • Work collaboratively with local and global engineering teams and occasionally engage with customers.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and attributes:

  • Strong programming skills in C and C++.
  • Proficiency in scripting (e.g., Python, Bash).
  • Practical understanding of hardware concepts and FPGA systems (conceptual knowledge acceptable for an internship).
  • Experience with software build systems and continuous integration tools.
  • Good communication skills, curiosity, and ability to work in a team.

Nice-to-have:

  • Prior exposure to embedded software development, DevOps pipelines, or demo/application development for hardware platforms.

Education Requirements

Must be currently enrolled at a UK-based university on a relevant degree (Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or similar) and eligible for a 13-month industrial placement year; ideal for 2nd or 3rd-year students on a placement program.
