FPGA IP Software Development Engineer
AlteraJob Title
FPGA IP Software Development Engineer
Role Summary
Owner of the end-to-end FPGA Soft IP development lifecycle: micro-architecture, RTL implementation, synthesis/place-and-route, timing closure, simulation, and hardware validation. Work closely with embedded software, board-level hardware, and systems teams to deliver robust, high-performance FPGA IP.
Experience Level
Senior; requires 7+ years of relevant RTL/IP development experience.
Responsibilities
Deliver, validate, and integrate FPGA Soft IP from architecture through hardware bring-up.
- Define micro-architecture and implement production-grade RTL using SystemVerilog, Verilog, or VHDL.
- Drive FPGA tool flow: synthesis, place-and-route, constraints creation, and static timing analysis (STA).
- Perform timing closure for complex multi-clock designs and resolve CDC issues and timing violations.
- Develop testbenches and run block-level behavioral simulations to validate logic functionality.
- Bring up and validate IP on evaluation boards using lab equipment (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, protocol testers).
- Collaborate with software and board-level hardware teams to define interfaces and system integration plans.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience to perform the role.
- 7+ years of production experience writing RTL (SystemVerilog, Verilog, or VHDL).
- Hands-on experience with major FPGA vendor toolchains (Altera/Intel Quartus Prime, AMD/Xilinx Vivado, or Microchip Libero).
- Experience with static verification: linting, CDC validation, and constraints troubleshooting.
- Proven ability to achieve timing closure on multi-clock designs.
- Scripting to automate flows: Tcl, Python, and/or Shell scripting.
- Experience with hardware bring-up and using lab debug equipment.
- Strong RTL design, modular coding practices, and reusable IP development.
- Nice-to-have: familiarity with embedded SoC architectures (ARM Cortex, RISC-V) and hardware-software co-design.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, VLSI, Embedded Systems, or a closely related technical discipline.
