SiemensJob Title
FPGA Intern - Benchmarking of Open-Source Placement and Routing Tools (Strategic Student Program)
Role Summary
Six-month onsite internship in Meudon (Paris area) to develop a reproducible, containerized benchmarking framework for open-source FPGA placement and routing tools. Work with mentors to install tools, run large benchmark sets, analyze results, and deliver a documented framework and technical report.
Experience Level
Internship / Entry-level - student role intended for master-level students. The position is a 6-month assignment starting February 2027.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Survey academic and community FPGA placement/routing tools and define evaluation metrics (compilation success, compile time, wirelength, congestion, timing, etc.).
- Design and implement an automated, reproducible framework to install, run, and evaluate multiple tools using containers to manage dependencies.
- Implement a compatibility layer to normalize benchmark data from different tools and compile designs for a common architecture.
- Execute large-scale benchmark runs, collect and analyze results, and produce practical recommendations.
- Package the benchmarking framework with installation and usage documentation and write a final technical report summarizing findings and suggestions for improvement.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and competencies:
- Proficiency in Python; experience working with C/C++ codebases.
- Experience compiling C/C++ projects, Unix shell scripting, and containerization (e.g., Docker) for reproducible builds.
- Familiarity with software infrastructure, dependency management, and automated test/benchmark pipelines.
- Analytical skills to define metrics, run experiments, and interpret results.
- Fluent in French and English for effective collaboration.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with mentors and team members; strong documentation skills.
- Knowledge of FPGA development or EDA flows is a plus but not required.
Education Requirements
Currently pursuing a Master's-level engineering degree (BAC+5) in France, typically in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field. No certifications were specified; the role is designed for enrolled students.
