FPGA Firmware Engineer / FPGA Design Engineer
QualcommJob Title
FPGA Firmware Engineer / FPGA Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join Qualcomm's Global CAD team to develop FPGA firmware and embedded software used for custom emulation hardware, tools, and flows that support ASIC and SoC design and validation.
The role focuses on firmware implementation, RTL/HDL work, and contributing to tooling and infrastructure for high-speed digital designs.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typical candidates have multiple years of FPGA/ASIC design or related engineering experience (often 2+ years).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Design and implement FPGA firmware for custom emulation and validation hardware.
- Develop and maintain RTL/HDL (SystemVerilog/Verilog) used in FPGA flows.
- Integrate firmware with embedded software and system-level test environments.
- Work with FPGA toolchains (Xilinx/Intel) and debug timing, CDC, and interfacing issues.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve tools, flows, and automation for ASIC/SoC development.
- Create customer-facing applications and documentation as needed.
Requirements
Must-have:
- Hands-on FPGA design or FPGA firmware development experience.
- Strong RTL/HDL skills, including SystemVerilog.
- Experience with modern FPGA platforms and toolchains (examples: Xilinx Ultrascale/Ultrascale+/MPSoC, Intel Stratix and respective tools).
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with engineering teams and customers.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with clock domain crossing, high-speed design and timing closure techniques.
- Familiarity with C++ (x86, aarch64), Python, and embedded/Linux environments.
- Experience with SoC/ARM-based designs and Linux device drivers.
- Familiarity implementing protocols such as AXI, PCIe, I2C, LVDS, and Ethernet.
- Experience with Git, JIRA, Agile practices, and software design principles.
Education Requirements
Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering or a related field with typically 2+ years of ASIC/FPGA design, verification, validation, or integration experience. Alternatives listed: Master's degree with 1+ year of relevant experience, or a PhD in a related field. Preferred fields include Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Applied Mathematics.
