Job Title

FPGA Engineer - Signal Processing & AI Acceleration

Role Summary

Design and implement FPGA-based signal-processing and AI-acceleration components for AstraSense, focusing on real-time feature extraction and hardware acceleration to inform architecture decisions between microcontroller, FPGA and hybrid options.

Work with embedded and modeling engineers to integrate ADC data paths, on-chip processors and software interfaces, and to deliver measurable latency, power and resource-use comparisons.

First 90 days: agree a deliverable scope (target: one feature-extraction pipeline on selected hardware with reproducible reference comparisons and measured latency, resource use and power).

Experience Level

Mid-level - approximately 3+ years of FPGA design experience expected.

Responsibilities

Deliver FPGA implementations, verification, measurement and integration for signal-processing and AI-acceleration features.

  • Implement real-time FFT, envelope detection, RMS and harmonic-distortion feature extraction in VHDL/Verilog or HLS with reference models and fixed-point error analysis.
  • Prototype hardware acceleration for small neural networks and anomaly models; evaluate benefits versus CPU/microcontroller baselines.
  • Measure latency, power and FPGA resource utilization to support architecture and platform decisions.
  • Integrate high-speed ADC data paths and connect logic with on-chip processors, memory and software interfaces.
  • Develop and own simulation testbenches, timing closure, regression tests and hardware bring-up; investigate simulation vs hardware discrepancies.
  • Maintain requirements, design and verification records to support DO-254–oriented assurance work without implying certification.
  • Collaborate with embedded and modeling engineers on data formats, throughput, interface boundaries and failure behavior.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for immediate contribution.

  • At least three years of hands-on FPGA design experience.
  • Practical VHDL or Verilog development experience, including simulation and testbench creation.
  • Experience with timing closure and hardware bring-up.
  • Experience implementing fixed-point digital signal processing algorithms in hardware.
  • Ability to measure and report latency, power and resource usage on FPGA platforms.
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills for hardware/software integration.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience with Microchip PolarFire SoC or AMD Kria/Zynq platforms.
  • HLS and AI-acceleration tool experience.
  • Experience with flight hardware or DO-254–oriented engineering processes.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. The role requires at least three years of FPGA design experience.
