FPGA Engineer II
Raytheon TechnologiesJob Title
FPGA Engineer II
Role Summary
Support a development program in the Airborne RF Electronics Design Department. Develop and deliver FPGA designs for AMD (Xilinx), Altera and Microchip devices used in multi-gigabit interfaces, RF/EO DSP, controls, data links, embedded processing and processor interfaces. Collaborate with circuit card designers and systems engineers from requirements and architecture through verification, production release and documentation. This is an onsite role in Plano, TX.
Experience Level
Mid-level - FPGA Engineer II. Typically requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
Provide full lifecycle engineering for production-quality FPGA designs, verification, integration and documentation.
- Develop FPGA architecture, partitioning and RTL (primarily VHDL) for multi-gigabit interfaces, RF DSP, controls, data links and embedded processing.
- Implement designs for AMD (Xilinx), Altera and Microchip devices using vendor toolchains (Vivado, Quartus, Libero).
- Create and execute verification using directed and constrained-random tests; track functional and code coverage.
- Integrate and debug FPGA/ASIC hardware in the lab; support bring-up and system integration.
- Use Git and CI/CD pipelines for source control and automated flows; participate in design reviews and code releases.
- Produce and maintain requirements, verification plans, user guides and configuration management artifacts.
- Report status against budget and schedule using agile practices and present results to leadership.
Requirements
Must-have qualifications and mandatory conditions.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant FPGA/ASIC engineering experience.
- Experience with FPGA/ASIC design (VHDL and/or Verilog) or verification (SystemVerilog).
- Hands-on experience with AMD (Xilinx), Altera and/or Microchip devices and associated tools (Vivado, Quartus Prime Pro, Libero).
- Integration and debug experience with FPGA/ASIC hardware in a laboratory environment.
- Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated flows, and team-based code release processes.
- Programming experience in Python or C.
- Experience with digital simulation tools (Questa, RivieraPro, or similar).
- Active DoD Top Secret security clearance required; U.S. citizenship required.
Nice-to-have:
- Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field.
- Embedded systems experience (ARM, MicroBlaze, NIOS) and experience with gigabit/multi-gigabit transceivers (MGTs).
- Constrained-random verification in UVM/SystemVerilog; High Level Synthesis (HLS) experience.
- Experience with timing closure, clock/reset domain crossing analysis, vector processors or GPUs.
- Knowledge of encryption standards (AES, RSA, ECC) or familiarity with AI/LLM-assisted workflows.
- Demonstrated ability to lead design efforts or small teams.
Education Requirements
Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or related). Advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD) in Electrical Engineering or related STEM fields are preferred. A suitable degree may be counted as up to two years of work experience.
