Job Title

FPGA Engineer I

Role Summary

Entry-level FPGA engineer supporting Airborne RF Electronics Design at RTX in McKinney, TX. The role delivers production-quality FPGA designs and verification for AMD (Xilinx), Intel/Altera, Microchip (Microsemi), and related device families across RF/EO DSP, multi-gigabit interfaces, controls, and embedded processing applications.

The position requires close collaboration with systems, hardware, and software engineers, and supports designs from requirements through production release. U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain/maintain a DoD Secret clearance are required; an active clearance is required on day 1.

Experience Level

Entry-level. Typically requires less than 2 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

Primary technical duties and team responsibilities.

  • Develop and deliver full-lifecycle FPGA designs targeting multiple vendors and device families.
  • Write synthesizable HDL (VHDL) for reliable, maintainable, and reusable designs.
  • Verify designs using directed and constrained-random tests; track functional and code coverage.
  • Apply timing constraints and achieve timing closure; perform place-and-route support.
  • Integrate and debug hardware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and similar tools.
  • Create and maintain requirements, verification plans, user guides, and configuration management artifacts.
  • Participate in internal and external technical reviews and support integration and test activities.
  • Contribute to program schedules, budgets, and CI/CD-driven development workflows.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and clearance requirements; preferred skills listed after must-haves.

  • Must-have: Hands-on FPGA digital design and HDL coding targeting configurable logic devices (VHDL experience preferred).
  • Must-have: Experience delivering FPGA solutions to system-level applications and working with at least three of these areas: digital design, HDL coding, FPGA device families, integration/debug, timing closure, digital simulation, and software scripting.
  • Must-have: Experience with one or more FPGA vendors/tools (AMD/Xilinx, Intel/Altera, Lattice, Microchip) and digital simulation tools (e.g., Questa, RivieraPro, or similar).
  • Must-have: Familiarity with FPGA timing constraints, timing closure, and integration/debug using lab instruments.
  • Must-have: Experience with Python or C programming and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Must-have: U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance; active clearance required on day 1.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of radar processing techniques, gigabit serial interfaces and MGTs, embedded processors/SoC integration (MicroBlaze, Nios, ARM), Linux-based FPGA workflows, git/GitHub, and encryption standards (AES, RSA, ECC).
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with verification using hardware platforms and AI/LLM-assisted workflows.
  • Nice-to-have: Strong teamwork skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.

Education Requirements

Typically requires a degree in a STEM field (for example BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics) or equivalent practical experience. The posting indicates this role commonly expects a STEM degree but allows equivalent practical experience.
