Job Title
FPGA Engineer (Contract Hardware Engineer, Mid)
Role Summary
Contract role for on-site FPGA prototyping and post-silicon validation on a 12-month assignment in Mountain View, CA. The engineer will own FPGA prototyping platforms, develop firmware-style tests and tooling, and drive lab bring-up and debug of silicon and platform issues.
Experience Level
Senior β approximately 7 years of relevant experience expected.
Responsibilities
The engineer will develop test firmware and tooling, maintain FPGA prototyping platforms, and lead post-silicon bring-up and debug.
- Develop C/C++ bare-metal and firmware-style test content and low-level drivers for subsystems and SoCs, including self-checking tests.
- Extend compile/build flows to support firmware-style tests and test automation.
- Own FPGA prototyping platforms (e.g., HAPS or Xilinx): create board images, bit files, and stable releases for firmware teams.
- Design custom FPGA RTL for protocol interfaces and feature enablement as required.
- Develop and extend Python-based tooling to interface with FPGA platforms and parse logs/data.
- Perform hardware debug in the lab using JTAG debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and multimeters.
- Drive post-silicon bring-up and validation: run validation suites, meet bring-up exit criteria, and debug boot/platform/connectivity issues.
- Root-cause failing post-silicon tests, analyze scan dumps, coordinate cross-team debug, and implement fixes.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for successful execution of the role.
- Proven experience developing C/C++ test content for subsystem and SoC verification (bare-metal and firmware-style tests).
- Hands-on experience bringing up and maintaining FPGA prototyping or emulation platforms (e.g., HAPS, Xilinx), including board images and platform tooling.
- Practical hardware debug skills using JTAG debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and multimeters.
- Experience with post-silicon verification and bring-up: test planning, test development, failure debug, and coverage signoff.
- Proficiency in Python or similar scripting languages (Perl, Ruby) for automation, build flows, and data parsing.
- Working knowledge of SystemVerilog testbenches and verification/testbench architecture.
- Familiarity with industry protocols such as AMBA (AXI/AHB/APB), JTAG, SPI, I2C/I3C, and USB.
- Strong understanding of silicon and computer architecture and experience collaborating across architecture, design, firmware, and validation teams.
Education Requirements
Not specified.
