Job Title
FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Design and implement FPGA modules and subsystems for embedded systems, integrating with software and hardware components. Focus is on VHDL-based RTL development, IP integration, verification, and lab testing to support system-level products.
Position is based in Houston, TX and supports system integration, performance optimization, and verification activities.
Experience Level
Senior β requires 10+ years of hands-on FPGA development experience.
Responsibilities
Primary duties across the design lifecycle.
- Design and implement FPGA modules and subsystems using VHDL.
- Integrate and verify third-party IP cores.
- Develop configurable, self-checking test benches in VHDL/OSVVM.
- Integrate FPGA designs with embedded software, flight software, and peripheral hardware.
- Optimize designs for performance, power consumption, and resource utilization; perform synthesis, place-and-route, and timing closure using toolchains such as Xilinx Vivado.
- Document design specifications, generate reports, and participate in peer review sessions.
- Assist in lab testing, system integration, and problem resolution throughout design cycles.
Requirements
Must-have qualifications and conditions.
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident (facility security requirement).
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening, including testing for marijuana.
- 10+ years of hands-on FPGA development experience.
- Experience integrating FPGA designs into system-wide hardware/software environments.
- Proficiency in VHDL and in delivering verification environments.
- Familiarity with embedded C/C++, SoC integration, and bus protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, I2S).
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed to meet critical project milestones.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience in ASIC design, DSP, or communication systems.
- Prior exposure to high-speed interface design for RF systems and Gigabit transceivers (PCIe, Ethernet, DisplayPort).
- Knowledge of Verilog and verification frameworks (UVM, OSVVM, OVM).
- Experience with simulation and verification tools such as ModelSim or equivalent.
- Experience with memory-mapped and stream interfaces (AXI-4, Avalon, AXI-Stream).
- Proficiency with hardware debugging tools, including logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and timing analysis.
- Understanding of FPGA constraints, timing closure, and synthesis directives.
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science or higher in Electrical Engineering required.
