Job Title
FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Contract FPGA engineer to support a Fortune 500 aerospace and defense customer. Work on digital design, implementation, integration, and verification of FPGA-based systems within a security-cleared program.
Role involves FPGA/ASIC logic development, timing closure, debugging, and collaboration with system and hardware teams to deliver production-quality designs.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Typical requirement: 5+ years relevant experience, or 3+ years with an advanced degree; at least 3 years of professional FPGA development experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and implement FPGA logic (VHDL/Verilog) to meet system requirements.
- Perform timing analysis, resource optimization, and timing closure.
- Develop and maintain testbenches, perform simulation and functional verification.
- Integrate FPGA designs with board-level hardware and system firmware.
- Debug and troubleshoot FPGA/ASIC issues using lab equipment and software tools.
- Use vendor toolchains (e.g., Vivado, Quartus, Libero) for synthesis, implementation, and bitstream generation.
- Maintain source control, produce design documentation, and follow configuration management processes.
- Work within a cleared environment and adhere to program security requirements.
Requirements
Must-have skills and conditions:
- Active U.S. government Final Secret security clearance.
- Minimum of 3 years professional FPGA development, ASIC front-end, or equivalent experience; typically 5+ years overall experience.
- Proficient in VHDL and/or Verilog for FPGA/ASIC design and implementation.
- Experience with digital circuit architecture, timing analysis, and timing closure.
- Familiarity with FPGA platforms (AMD/Xilinx, Intel/Altera, Microchip) and vendor toolchains (e.g., Vivado, Quartus, Libero).
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills for FPGA/ASIC systems and lab integration.
- Proficiency with version control systems (e.g., Git, Subversion) and configuration management.
Education Requirements
Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field; an advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in a related field is acceptable with reduced experience. Equivalent practical experience in FPGA/ASIC development may substitute for formal degrees.
