FPGA Development Tools - Intern
AlteraJob Title
FPGA Development Tools - Intern
Role Summary
Short-term internship on the FPGA development tools team building software and flows that enable use of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Work with cross-functional teams to deliver toolchains, compilers, runtimes, and firmware that interface with FPGA silicon, IP, and boards.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for students. Suitable for candidates currently enrolled in an undergraduate program with limited professional experience.
Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities for this internship include engineering tasks that support FPGA tool development and customer-facing workflows.
- Research, design, implement, and optimize software tools, compilers, assemblers, or runtimes for FPGA workflows.
- Develop software abstractions and frameworks for FPGA acceleration in domains such as deep learning, DSP, or data analytics.
- Integrate tools with FPGA silicon, IP, board-level interfaces, and firmware.
- Debug and optimize tool and runtime performance; validate against hardware and models.
- Collaborate with cross-functional and multi-site teams and respond to stakeholder requests or issues.
Requirements
Must-have skills and attributes for candidates, plus a few desirable traits.
- Programming experience in C/C++ and/or Python; coursework or project experience in these languages recommended.
- Familiarity with digital logic, FPGAs, and hardware description (e.g., Verilog); hands-on or coursework experience preferred (brief prior experience acceptable).
- Strong problem-solving ability, ability to work independently, and prioritize tasks.
- Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a distributed team.
- Attention to quality, disciplined engineering practices, and tolerance for ambiguity.
- Nice-to-have: exposure to compilers, models, board design, or acceleration frameworks for ML/DSP.
Education Requirements
Must be currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (undergraduate) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related technical field. The posting expects some coursework or at least ~3 months of experience in areas such as C/C++, Python, digital logic, FPGAs, or Verilog.
