FPGA Development Tools Engineer - Placer

Role Summary

Develop and optimize FPGA placement algorithms within the Quartus compiler toolchain to improve timing, congestion, performance, and resource utilization for complex designs. You will collaborate with teams responsible for routing, synthesis, and timing to deliver placement capabilities that scale to large customer workloads.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include research, implementation, and integration of placement technology into the compiler flow.

  • Design, implement, and enhance FPGA placement algorithms to optimize timing, congestion, and resource utilization.
  • Contribute to the end-to-end compiler flow and coordinate with routing, synthesis, and timing teams.
  • Improve runtime performance, scalability, and quality of results for large designs.
  • Develop and refine timing-driven placement strategies for high-frequency designs.
  • Analyze placement quality, identify congestion and timing bottlenecks, and drive improvements to convergence and design closure.
  • Integrate placement capabilities into the toolchain and validate across diverse workloads.

Requirements

Required and preferred technical skills for the role.

  • Must-have: Working experience with C++.
  • Preferred / Nice-to-have: Experience with Verilog, Python, and TCL.
  • Preferred / Nice-to-have: Experience with compiler/toolchain integration, placement or timing-driven optimization, and performance/scalability work on large designs.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
