Firmware Engineer Intern - Winter 2027
Role Summary
Join the ODSP PHY SW team working on Marvell's networking PAM4 DSPs used in data center optical modules. The team owns embedded firmware, customer SDKs, lab test and QA for DSP-based products.
This internship contributes to embedded firmware and test infrastructure used by cloud customers and lab teams, with hands-on involvement across design, implementation, testing and debugging.
Experience Level
Internship / Entry-level. Candidates should be actively enrolled in an undergraduate program with at least 1 year of related coursework.
Responsibilities
Typical tasks the intern will perform:
- Develop embedded C firmware for DSP hardware control.
- Write C and Python test code for utilities, GUIs, regression and simulation infrastructure.
- Take features from concept through design, review, implementation, test and release.
- Work on mission-critical features for cloud customers and support lab validation.
- Debug complex HW/SW issues, identify root causes, and create/follow Jira tickets to resolution.
- Collaborate with hardware and software engineers across teams.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and attributes (education requirements are listed separately below):
- Curious, driven, and able to learn complex systems.
- Strong programming in C and Python; familiarity with git, Linux, makefiles, gdb, IDEs, and bash is a plus.
- Understanding of software development workflow: issue tracking (Jira), SCM (Git/GitLab), code review, CI (Jenkins), and regression testing.
- Familiarity with computer and processor architecture and how processors interact with memory and peripherals.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals (OSI model) with emphasis on PHY through data link layer.
- Experience with MCU/embedded processor environments is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) is a strong plus; ability to critically evaluate AI-generated code.
- Good problem-solving skills and clear verbal and written communication in English.
- May require eligibility for access to export-controlled technology; applicants may be subject to export license review prior to employment.
Education Requirements
Candidate must be currently pursuing a BS (Bachelor's) degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field. At least 1+ years of related coursework is expected.
