Firmware Engineer II
Cadence Design SystemsJob Title
Firmware Engineer II
Role Summary
Develop bare-metal firmware and low-level APIs for DDR5 PHY microcontroller subsystems. Work with hardware designers, memory-subsystem architects, and verification engineers to implement training algorithms and enable firmware-hardware co-verification.
Tasks include firmware development for RTL-based simulations and silicon bring-up and debugging.
Experience Level
Mid-level (Engineer II). Years of experience not specified.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Design and implement bare-metal firmware in C for microcontrollers used in DDR5 PHY
- Develop low-level APIs to control PHY hardware and memory training sequences
- Collaborate with hardware designers and memory subsystem architects to derive and implement training algorithms
- Define and participate in firmware-hardware co-verification plans with the verification team
- Debug firmware within RTL-based simulations (C + Verilog) and using EDA simulation tools and waveform viewers
- Perform silicon bring-up and debug on target boards
- Write and use scripts (Shell/Perl/Python/TCL) to automate tests and debug flows
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Strong knowledge of DDR5 JEDEC specification and DIMM configurations
- Experience developing bare-metal firmware for high-speed SerDes or memory-interface PHYs
- Proficient in C for embedded systems and familiar with relevant IDEs
- Comfortable debugging firmware in RTL simulations and understanding microcontroller subsystems
- Experience with scripting languages (Shell, Perl, Python, TCL)
- Familiarity with verification EDA tools, simulators, and waveform viewers
Nice-to-have:
- Prior silicon bring-up experience
- Experience designing or implementing memory training algorithms
