Firmware Engineer - Ethernet Switching
Role Summary
Join the Ethernet Switch Firmware Core team to design and implement the firmware abstraction layer for NVIDIA Spectrum-based Ethernet switches. Work with hardware, ASIC and software teams to deliver firmware features, improve performance and ensure system integration for cloud and AI networking products.
Experience Level
Entry-level / Early career β expects approximately 2+ years of experience in embedded firmware development.
Responsibilities
Key duties include designing, implementing and validating firmware for Ethernet switch ASICs and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Participate in full firmware lifecycle from architecture and implementation to integration and testing for Spectrum products.
- Collaborate with hardware and ASIC teams to align firmware with silicon and system designs.
- Design and implement algorithms to improve system scale and performance.
- Debug system issues across firmware, hardware and higher-layer software; reproduce and resolve customer-reported problems.
- Implement and integrate new features according to the product roadmap and release schedule.
- Prototype and demonstrate new ideas and improvements (e.g., internal hackathons or proof-of-concept work).
- Coordinate with global R&D teams to ensure interoperability and delivery.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and attributes for the role.
- 2+ years developing firmware for embedded systems.
- 2+ years using C/C++ in real-time embedded environments (C preferred).
- Proven expertise with networking protocols at L2, L3 and L4 layers.
- Strong debugging skills for embedded systems.
- Familiarity with ASIC development processes and running code on FPGA targets.
- Self-motivated, creative and able to work collaboratively with local and international teams.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with networking products such as adapters or switches.
- Patents or publications in networking, communication protocols, ASIC design or computer architecture.
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
