Job Title

Firmware Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Platform Engineering team to design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for board, switch, and optics hardware across next-generation platform solutions. The role focuses on bootloaders, device drivers, platform management firmware, hardware bring-up, and low-level debug in multi-disciplinary projects.

You will work closely with hardware design, ASIC, signal/power integrity, validation, and systems software teams to ensure firmware is robust, secure, and production-ready throughout the platform lifecycle. This is a technically visible role that provides firmware architecture expertise and lead-level debug support.

Experience Level

Senior - experience guidance: approximately 10–15 years of relevant professional firmware experience (or 5–10 years with an advanced degree).

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include firmware development, hardware bring-up support, and ensuring production readiness for platform firmware.

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware, boot software, and device drivers for high-speed silicon, memory, interconnect, and power/thermal subsystems.
  • Support early hardware bring-up and debug prototype systems and firmware/hardware interactions.
  • Develop and maintain platform management controller firmware and remote monitoring/control interfaces.
  • Implement low-level link establishment and control-plane logic between optical modules and host interfaces for reliable high-speed connectivity.
  • Design communication interfaces for pluggable modules and implement firmware memory architecture, access controls, and firmware-updatable power sequencing.
  • Design and implement secure firmware update mechanisms (signed images, verified boot, remote management APIs) with recovery and independent updatability.
  • Develop embedded telemetry to collect high-frequency system metrics and stream to host with minimal performance impact.
  • Build and maintain automated firmware build, test, and release infrastructure; support manufacturing test integration with production images.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation; identify platform integration risks and drive mitigation and resolution.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for this role. Education details are summarized under Education Requirements below.

  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded firmware and low-level driver development.
  • Scripting skills for automation (Python or Bash).
  • Experience developing low-level boot and platform initialization firmware for embedded systems.
  • Solid understanding of high-speed system architecture, signal interfaces, and peripheral communication protocols.
  • Experience with platform management controller firmware and remote system management interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded operating systems, low-level drivers, and memory-mapped hardware interfaces.
  • Practical experience using lab-based debug equipment to isolate firmware/hardware interaction issues.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated firmware test infrastructure.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debug skills with accountability and urgency.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with networking silicon platforms from major industry vendors.
  • Familiarity with industry security assurance standards for firmware.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field (typical experience: 10–15 years). Alternatively, Master's degree or PhD in a related technical field with roughly 5–10 years of experience. The posting references technical degrees in CS and EE and allows advanced-degree alternatives; equivalent practical experience may be considered.

This position may require access to export-controlled technology; applicants must meet export eligibility requirements where applicable. Reasonable accommodation requests during the selection process can be directed to Marvell HR Helpdesk at TAOps@marvell.com.
