Firmware Development Engineer - Network & Storage Software

Role Summary

Work on firmware, drivers and system-level software to improve performance and reliability of AMD network and storage products. The role partners with architecture specialists and cross-functional teams to support new ASIC/hardware bring-ups and optimize software stacks for low latency and high throughput.

Experience Level

Senior - the role expects 8+ years of software/firmware development experience, particularly in Linux and system-level environments.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include design, development, validation and optimization of firmware and system software for networking and storage products.

  • Collaborate with architecture specialists to influence and optimize future product designs.
  • Apply data-driven methods to identify and target performance optimizations.
  • Participate in ASIC and hardware bring-ups; debug and resolve board- and target-level failures.
  • Design and develop firmware, drivers and application-level components for new technologies.
  • Investigate alternatives and implement more efficient solutions for existing functionality.
  • Develop and maintain technical relationships with peers and partners across teams.
  • Stay current with software and hardware trends relevant to algorithms, architecture, networking and storage.

Requirements

Must-have and expected skills for immediate contribution; nice-to-have items follow.

  • Must-have: 8+ years of application/firmware/driver development in Linux environments.
  • Must-have: Strong proficiency in C and C++; experience scripting or tooling in Python.
  • Must-have: Hands-on experience with driver, firmware or low-level application development and debugging on target boards.
  • Must-have: Strong debugging skills using standard tools and techniques; familiarity with source control and development workflows.
  • Must-have: Effective communication, organization, and problem-solving skills; ability to work across teams to drive issues to resolution.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience in storage and networking domains including NVMe, RDMA (RoCE), and related protocol development.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with system-level architectures (PCIe, AXI, memory controllers), SR-IOV-capable PCIe subsystems and NIC drivers (kernel and user mode).
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with embedded processors (ARM), RTOS (Zephyr), virtualization (KVM, ESX, Xen) and high-performance networking frameworks (DPDK, ODP).
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with NFV acceleration, packet-processing, overlay protocols (VxLAN, NVGRE), offload technologies (TSO/RSO) and related datacenter networking development.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with common industrial interfaces and peripherals (Ethernet, PCIe, SPI, I2C, USB, GPIO) and memory architectures (DDR/SDRAM/DMA).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree (B.E/B.S, M.E/M.S, M.Tech or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related technical field - or equivalent practical experience.
