Firmware Development Engineer

Role Summary

Work within Intel's Central Engineering Group (CEG) to design, implement, and validate firmware for test chips and SoC projects that demonstrate Intel manufacturing and IP. The role focuses on low-level firmware, system integration, and cross-functional collaboration with RTL and board teams.

Responsibilities

The role centers on developing and validating firmware to produce complete, bootable systems across multiple hardware platforms.

  • Design, develop, and debug ROM, bootloaders, and low-level firmware for multiple hardware platforms.
  • Integrate firmware components into complete, bootable system images.
  • Optimize low-level code for performance and reliable hardware-software interaction.
  • Conduct design reviews, testing, validation, and quality assurance for firmware releases.
  • Debug complex boot, platform, and system-level issues across simulated environments, FPGAs, and physical hardware.
  • Create unit and integration tests and build supporting automation frameworks.
  • Collaborate with RTL and board design engineers to resolve cross-domain issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members and stakeholders.

  • Must-have: 6+ years of firmware development experience; strong C/C++ programming skills; experience with one or more architectures (ARM, x86, RISC-V) and their firmware stacks; hardware debugging with tools such as JTAG and GDB.
  • Must-have: Experience developing and validating firmware on simulated environments, FPGAs, and physical hardware; ability to develop tests and automation for firmware validation.
  • Nice-to-have: UEFI/BIOS experience (EDK II, Coreboot), Linux driver development, GNU toolchain proficiency, and deep knowledge of Linux and Windows boot processes.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with ACPI, PCIe, USB, SMBIOS, GPIO, UART, secure boot and other security implementations.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience using AI-assisted or agent-based coding tools.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (as stated). Equivalent relevant practical experience is not explicitly listed but may be considered.
