Firmware Design Intern
Role Summary
Join the Signal Integrity Products group in Ottawa to design, implement, verify and characterize firmware for high-speed data communications and video products. You will work with design and system teams to translate functional requirements into firmware modules and test plans, and validate interoperability with hardware.
Estimated pay: $26.00 - $28.50 CAD per hour (range provided by employer).
Experience Level
Entry-level internship. 12–16 month student firmware design internship. Desired start date: May 2027.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include firmware development, verification, and collaboration with hardware and system teams.
- Analyze product functional requirements and define required data structures and behaviors.
- Design firmware architecture and modules to meet functional requirements.
- Implement firmware using C, C++, and assembly as needed.
- Develop algorithms in coordination with design and system engineers.
- Write documentation for firmware modules and system behavior.
- Define test cases and create test automation to validate module design.
- Troubleshoot, test, and debug firmware and ensure interoperability with hardware.
- Work under mentorship from senior designers and participate in team activities.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and competencies for the internship.
- Good understanding of real-time operating systems (RTOS).
- Embedded programming experience in C or C++.
- Basic knowledge of Python for scripting and test automation.
- Ability to read hardware block diagrams and schematics.
- Ability to troubleshoot, test, and debug firmware and hardware interactions.
- Ability to learn quickly and work independently or in a team.
- Availability for a 12–16 month internship starting around May 2027.
Nice-to-have:
- Prior experience with firmware verification or embedded test automation.
