Field Application Engineer - Automotive

Role Summary

Support automotive customers in deploying NXP silicon by delivering embedded firmware, system-level bring-up, hardware validation, and technical training. Work with cross-functional teams (R&D, product, marketing, sales) to resolve issues and drive design wins.

Experience Level

Mid-level — minimum 5 years of development engineering or applications support experience with microcontroller-based embedded systems.

Responsibilities

Provide technical customer support, develop and validate embedded solutions, and coordinate cross-functional activities to meet customer expectations.

  • Develop, port, and debug embedded firmware (C/C++) and support software bring-up on customer hardware.
  • Define cross-functional system solutions, create validation plans, and perform bench builds and schematic/PCB reviews.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues, perform root-cause analysis, and drive resolution with internal teams and supply partners.
  • Manage projects and schedules to deliver solutions on time per customer requirements.
  • Provide technical training and presentations to customers and internal teams.
  • Provide product development feedback to influence future silicon and software designs.
  • Collaborate with sales, marketing, R&D, and FAE colleagues to achieve customer objectives.

Requirements

Key qualifications and skills required and preferred.

  • Must-have: Minimum 5 years experience in embedded systems development or applications support for microcontroller-based systems.
  • Must-have: Proven experience developing embedded firmware in C and C++.
  • Must-have: Knowledge of SoC hardware interfaces such as Ethernet, MIPI, SDIO, LPDDR3/4, Quad/Octal SPI, USB2.0/3.0, UART, SPI, I2C.
  • Must-have: Strong troubleshooting skills with ability to analyze schematics and data to develop effective solutions.
  • Must-have: Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to present technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Must-have: Willingness to travel up to 25% (primarily within California and Michigan).
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of ARM Cortex processors.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with real-time operating systems such as SafeRTOS, FreeRTOS, or Zephyr.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with graphics/video subsystems and related drivers.
  • Nice-to-have: Prior experience in automotive electronics/software development or as a Field Application Engineer.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field — or equivalent practical experience.
