Job Title

Failure Analysis Engineer

Role Summary

Lead investigations into optical, electrical, and mechanical failures of advanced optical transceivers to identify root causes and drive corrective actions. Work closely with R&D, supplier quality, and production teams to document findings, assess field risk, and improve product design and manufacturing.

This is a hands-on engineering role that includes fault isolation, test infrastructure bring-up, automation scripting, and occasional customer technical engagement.

Experience Level

Mid-level β€” minimum 5 years of relevant failure analysis, test, or transceiver experience.

Responsibilities

Investigate returned modules and test failures, document results, and support corrective actions across engineering and production.

  • Perform optical, electrical, and mechanical failure analysis of transceivers from field returns and internal testing.
  • Troubleshoot using schematics, test equipment, switches, fault isolation techniques, and Design of Experiments.
  • Develop and bring up internal and external test infrastructure to reproduce and validate failure signatures.
  • Create automation/test scripts to operate and collect data from customer switch environments.
  • Interface with production databases to retrieve shipment, test, and traceability data.
  • Assess field risk and estimate reliability using available tools and field data.
  • Document test results with data, photographs, and repair records; produce periodic reports and presentations for R&D and customers.
  • Collaborate with supplier quality and production to define corrective and preventive actions.
  • Respond to direct technical inquiries from customers as needed.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; a few nice-to-have items listed separately.

  • Must-have: Minimum 5 years of related failure analysis or test experience.
  • Must-have: Extensive experience with analog and digital circuits and device characterization techniques.
  • Must-have: Familiarity with failure analysis methodologies, fault isolation, and use of laboratory test equipment.
  • Must-have: Strong device physics background and working knowledge of OSA assembly periphery circuits.
  • Must-have: Strong data analysis skills and clear verbal and written communication.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience testing transceiver modules at 400G, 800G, 1.6T or similar high-speed systems.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with MSA/customer standards and datacenter architecture.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of OSA assemblies, PCBA, and module manufacturing processes.

Education Requirements

BS or MS in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field β€” or equivalent practical experience.
