Equipment Engineer (Active Alignment Machine)
Role Summary
Technical lead for selection, development, qualification and production support of active alignment equipment used for FAU, lens, isolator, and PIC chip assembly. Acts as the primary equipment engineering interface between optical design, package design, manufacturing, and external equipment suppliers.
Experience Level
Mid-level β typically requires 5+ years of relevant experience in active alignment machine design, assembly, or testing.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include machine development, supplier qualification, and production support for active alignment processes.
- Identify, evaluate and qualify FAU-PIC equipment suppliers worldwide for pluggable/NPO/CPO packages.
- Lead co-design and machine qualification with suppliers, including risk analysis and mitigation planning to meet delivery and installation timelines.
- Develop, validate and transfer new active-alignment machine technologies and processes to NPI and mass production lines.
- Support process development, yield optimization, troubleshooting, and equipment qualification in production and R&D labs.
- Collaborate with package production and R&D teams during process development and scale-up.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience.
- 5+ years experience in active alignment machine design, assembly, or testing with demonstrated experience in coupling efficiency, FAU, PIC, UV epoxy, UPH, and equipment qualification procedures.
- Deep knowledge of the active alignment machine industry and ability to select appropriate suppliers for different products and stages (R&D vs production).
- Hands-on experience with stages, controllers, power meters, MPO connectors, laser sources, and alignment algorithms.
- Proficient in SolidWorks; able to read circuit schematics and understand optical simulation results.
- Strong mechanical assembly, debugging and equipment qualification skills.
- Fluency in English for stakeholder communication.
- Willingness to travel 30β50% in Asian countries.
Education Requirements
B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, or Optical Engineering.
