Engineering Intern - In‑Cabin Sensing: Multi‑Sensor Data Collection & Fusion
NXP SemiconductorsJob Title
Engineering Intern - In‑Cabin Sensing: Multi‑Sensor Data Collection & Fusion
Role Summary
Six‑month engineering internship within NXP's System Innovation team to build and validate an experimental in‑cabin data‑collection platform and to investigate multi‑sensor data fusion for in‑vehicle applications (e.g., child‑presence detection).
The work spans two complementary areas: extend and consolidate a ROS‑based data collection and transport platform (including multi‑anchor UWB and timestamp alignment), and use collected datasets to evaluate fusion algorithms and application‑level performance. Collaboration with an international, multi‑site team is required.
Experience Level
Entry‑level (internship). Target: final‑year master's student or engineering school student; no prior professional experience required.
Responsibilities
The intern will perform a subset of the following tasks; scope will be adapted to the candidate's strengths.
- Review and reproduce the existing in‑cabin data‑collection setup and Linux‑based software stack.
- Extend the platform to support multiple sensors, multi‑anchor UWB, time‑aligned acquisition, and reliable data transport (e.g., MQTT broker).
- Integrate additional sensors and device drivers into the ROS‑based setup.
- Measure and characterize timestamp accuracy across sensors and assess suitability for data fusion.
- Collect synchronized multi‑sensor datasets and evaluate data quality.
- Provide recommendations on platform architecture, sensor integration, synchronization, and fusion approach.
- Investigate multi‑sensor fusion methods and evaluate application‑level metrics (e.g., child‑presence detection).
- Optionally develop a visualization or demonstrator for presentation (e.g., IWT Toulouse 2027).
Requirements
Must‑have technical skills and professional attributes, followed by beneficial skills.
- Good programming skills in Python and/or C/C++ (must‑have).
- Comfortable working on Linux (embedded or desktop) (must‑have).
- Working knowledge in at least one of: sensor integration/device drivers, data acquisition and synchronization, digital signal processing, or data fusion (must‑have).
- Practical, structured approach to experimental work; ability to work independently and within an international team (must‑have).
- Professional proficiency in English (must‑have).
- Familiarity with ROS, UWB, MQTT or messaging systems, Kalman filtering, sensor fusion, or data visualization (nice‑to‑have).
Education Requirements
Final‑year master's student or final‑year engineering school student in data engineering, embedded systems, signal processing, wireless communications, robotics, or a related technical field. (The posting targets students completing an engineering or master’s program.)
