Engineer, Staff - Video Firmware

Role Summary

Staff-level engineer on Qualcomm's Systems Engineering team responsible for developing and productizing video and imaging firmware for Qualcomm mobile processors. Work spans firmware, multimedia feature design, hardware subsystem support, and cross-functional productization activities.

Experience Level

Senior / Staff-level. Typical experience 3–5 years in embedded/video firmware engineering. Minimum experience per degree: Bachelor's +4 years, Master's +3 years, PhD +2 years.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include design, implementation, and productization of video firmware and features for mobile processors, and collaborating across teams to deliver customer-ready solutions.

• Develop and productize video and imaging solutions on Qualcomm processors.
• Enhance firmware for video and imaging subsystems and support hardware subsystem improvements.
• Design video/imaging features and coordinate with systems, software, and hardware teams during productization.
• Collaborate with customers and internal teams to commercialize video solutions.
• Lead and mentor a small team (typically 2–5 engineers) and manage task assignments and strategy.
• Debug and optimize multimedia features on mobile platforms.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience followed by preferred qualifications.

• Recent relevant experience (typically 3–5 years) in embedded systems or multimedia firmware development.
• Strong C programming skills, multithreading, and OS fundamentals.
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and debug video/multimedia features for mobile platforms.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills; able to guide team members and make technical decisions.
• Leadership experience managing small engineering teams and planning resources.

Nice-to-have:

• Understanding of signal processing and video compression/codecs (encoder and decoder).
• Experience with H.264, HEVC, VP9, MPEG-family codec development, porting, or optimization.
• Experience in multimedia domains such as video, camera, or computer vision.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field with 4+ years' relevant experience; OR Master's in those fields with 3+ years' relevant experience; OR PhD in those fields with 2+ years' relevant experience. Related technical fields are acceptable.
