Job Title
Engineer Principal - FPGA Design
Role Summary
Lead architecture, design, and integration of FPGA SoC solutions for space and other high-reliability electronic systems within BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems. Work with cross-functional teams of electrical and FPGA engineers through the program lifecycle to deliver digital IP, algorithms, and system-level FPGA implementations.
Experience Level
Senior — requires 6+ years of related experience; advanced degrees may substitute for experience as described under Education Requirements.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include architecting and delivering FPGA-based systems and providing technical leadership for product roadmaps.
- Architect and lead complex FPGA SoC designs using AMD/Xilinx toolchains and IP.
- Develop FPGA code and integrate digital IP for SOC architectures, digital filters, image processing, and communication interfaces.
- Implement high-speed digital electronics and embedded processor systems for high-reliability applications.
- Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and define roadmaps for future products.
- Collaborate across teams to convert system requirements into subsystem/board/firmware implementations and perform requirements flow-down.
- Maintain a regular on-site presence (three or more days per normally scheduled week) and support program needs, including occasional travel between facilities.
- Prepare documentation, technical presentations, and other deliverables to support program execution.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience, plus preferred (nice-to-have) qualifications.
Must-have:
- Proven experience with VHDL, Verilog, and SystemVerilog for FPGA development.
- Hands-on use of FPGA design tools such as Xilinx Vivado/Vitis and Mentor ModelSim/QuestaSim.
- Digital system partitioning and implementation experience in FPGAs and high-speed digital electronics.
- Experience with embedded processor systems and integration of digital IP.
- Ability to translate requirements and perform system/subsystem flow-downs.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with OVM/UVM verification methodologies.
- Familiarity with high-speed interfaces (PCIe, Ethernet) and signal integrity tools (Mentor HyperLynx).
- Background in signal processing/DSP algorithms and cybersecurity topics.
- Experience in space, aerospace, or other high-reliability applications.
Education Requirements
BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required. A Master’s or Ph.D. may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of formal education. Degree should be from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
