Job Title

Embedded Software Engineer (Linux/C/C++)

Role Summary

Develop and maintain embedded and control software for next-generation reticle inspection systems. Work within the Embedded SW team in the RAPID division to integrate, test, and deploy software on multi e-beam based inspection tools.

Collaborate with cross-discipline teams (mechanical, electrical, optics, software) and with the California engineering team to perform on-tool integration, troubleshooting, and iterative product improvements.

Experience Level

Mid-level — typical requirement: 4+ years of industrial experience in embedded and controls software development. Specific minimum experience varies by degree level (see Education Requirements).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include integration, testing, development, and on-tool support for embedded subsystems.

  • Execute integration, testing and development plans for subsystems on first tools in coordination with the California team.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for the Embedded SW Engineering team during integration and on-tool activities.
  • Troubleshoot, investigate defects, perform root cause analysis, and implement solutions across software, hardware, and optics components.
  • Develop firmware and software modules for machine control, including interrupt-driven, multi-threaded real-time applications.
  • Implement software in C/C++ on Linux/real-time OS and integrate with custom and third-party motion controllers over Ethernet, RS232, USB, and TCP/IP.
  • Work in cleanroom environments to perform subsystem testing and system-level verification.
  • Define and execute test plans; document and present test results and technical reports.
  • Occasional global travel to California for training and project support.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience required for this role.

  • 4+ years of professional experience in embedded and controls software development in an industrial environment.
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++; object-oriented design and programming.
  • Experience with Linux and/or RTOS environments, multi-threading, synchronization, and software architecture for real-time systems.
  • Experience with communication protocols: Serial (RS232), Ethernet, TCP/IP sockets; familiarity with EtherCAT is a plus.
  • Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills across software and hardware boundaries.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and to document and present technical findings.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with motion control systems (stepper/servo/piezo), control loop design (e.g. PID), and related hardware.
  • Python or other scripting languages, Linux administration, and UML experience.
  • Hands-on lab experience with electrical, mechanical, or optical measurement instruments and semiconductor fab operations.

Education Requirements

Doctorate (PhD), Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Control Systems, or a similar technical field. Minimum qualifications listed by KLA: PhD with 0 years related experience; Master’s with 3 years related experience; Bachelor’s with 5 years related experience.
