Embedded Software Developer – Ethernet PHY & Interface Drivers
Role Summary
Develop OS-agnostic embedded C drivers and APIs that interface directly with Ethernet physical layers (PHYs) and related MAC/PCS functionality for automotive and industrial applications. Work in a cross-functional chip-design and test team to bring up interfaces from 10 Mbit MII up to high-speed SerDes (1G–25G) and maintain test infrastructure and platforms.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The role expects five or more years of applicable embedded-software experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include low-level driver development, hardware bring-up, and contributing to test and switch-driver functionality.
- Develop and maintain OS-agnostic C APIs and PHY drivers for Ethernet standards (e.g., 1000BASE-T, 1000BASE-T1, 10BASE-T1S).
- Bring up, tune, and debug interfaces from 10 Mbit MII to high-speed SerDes (1G–25G).
- Implement PCS and MAC layer functionality from a driver perspective.
- Produce MISRA-compliant C code and follow automotive quality/safety processes (e.g., ASPICE practices).
- Contribute to automated testing infrastructure and maintain test platforms.
- Collaborate with chip design, testing, and customer-support teams to resolve hardware/software issues.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- Strong proficiency in C and embedded software development.
- Experience with, or strong interest in, physical Ethernet layers, PHYs, and interface standards.
- Comfort working close to hardware and debugging with datasheets, registers, test equipment, and debug tools.
- Experience working in regulated environments with demanding safety, quality, and reliability requirements.
- Structured, analytical troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
- Good written and spoken English communication skills.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with Ethernet switch SoCs, PHYs, or network interface drivers; IEEE 802.1Q and Layer 2 concepts.
- Familiarity with link training, auto-negotiation, PCS, MAC, SerDes, MDIO management, and automotive/industrial Ethernet.
- Knowledge of Git, MISRA, ASPICE, ISO 26262, IEC 62443, Linux kernel/user-space development, Ruby, CMake, or CI/automated testing.
- Participation in standards bodies or industry consortia and practical experience with AI-assisted development tools (with attention to verification and security).
Education Requirements
A relevant technical education (technical qualification or degree) and five or more years of applicable experience are expected.
