Embedded Functional Safety Engineer
SynopsysJob Title
Embedded Functional Safety Engineer
Role Summary
Lead functional safety activities for Synopsys embedded IP and software projects to ensure ISO 26262 compliance across the development lifecycle. Work with cross-functional R&D teams (Controller, PHY, FPGA, verification) to translate system safety goals into software and hardware safety requirements and certification-ready documentation.
Experience Level
Mid-level - approximately 5+ years of professional experience in functional safety engineering or safety-critical embedded systems.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include ownership of functional safety processes, artifacts, and coordination with certification bodies.
- Lead functional safety activities for embedded software and IP projects, ensuring ISO 26262 compliance throughout the development lifecycle.
- Develop FuSa work products: safety plans, FMEA, FTA, FMEDA, safety requirement specifications, and safety cases.
- Perform hazard analysis and risk assessment, define safety goals and ASIL classifications, and decompose safety requirements to software and hardware units.
- Collaborate with R&D across Controller, PHY, FPGA, and verification to integrate safety practices into design, implementation, and verification.
- Coordinate safety reviews and assessments with internal stakeholders and external certification bodies to prepare for third-party evaluation.
- Maintain comprehensive traceability of safety requirements across development artifacts using requirements management tools such as DOORS or Polarion.
- Support customer engagements and occasional short-term travel for global collaboration and assessments.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience.
- Minimum 5 years professional experience in functional safety engineering, embedded systems development, or safety-critical software in automotive or comparable industries.
- Expert knowledge of ISO 26262 with demonstrated proficiency in parts 4 (system), 6 (software), and 8 (supporting processes).
- Proven track record developing functional safety work products that have passed third-party assessment by certification bodies (e.g., TÜV SÜD, TÜV Rheinland).
- Strong embedded software foundation: proficiency in C programming, RTOS implementations, and safety-relevant architecture patterns.
- Experience with safety analysis methods: FMEA, FTA, FMEDA, hazard and risk assessment.
- Familiarity with requirements management and traceability tools (DOORS, Polarion) and preparing certification-ready documentation.
Nice-to-have:
- Professional Functional Safety Engineer certification from a recognized certification body.
- Experience with automotive embedded IP and verification across Controller, PHY, and FPGA domains.
Education Requirements
BSc or MSc in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline. Professional functional safety certification (e.g., certified Functional Safety Engineer) is highly valued.
