Role Summary
Member of the Safety, Quality & Mission Assurance (SQMA) System Safety Engineering and Certification team responsible for ensuring the safety of electronic hardware and computer systems for spacecraft, launch vehicles, and facilities. Work includes design, assessment, and assurance of PLDs, ASICs, FPGAs, complex ICs, and system-level computer hardware to meet regulatory and program safety requirements.
This role directly impacts human spaceflight safety by verifying compliance with safety standards and improving system safety processes.
Experience Level
Mid-level (Engineer III). The posting specifies 5+ years of relevant engineering experience, with at least 2 years involved in generating compliance claims to safety standards.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include design and independent assessment of electronic-hardware safety and assurance activities.
- Support development and safety assurance of custom electronic hardware (PLDs, ASICs, FPGAs), complex COTS ICs, multi-core computer systems, and circuit boards across spacecraft and launch systems.
- Collaborate with systems, electrical, and software engineers to derive and verify safety requirements from PHAs, FHAs, FMECAs, FTAs, and human error analyses.
- Review and approve safety analyses and safety requirements for electronic hardware; assess risk characterizations and open technical risks.
- Perform independent assessments and audits against applicable safety standards (for example RTCA DO-254, MIL-STD-882, NASA standards, Range Safety, FAA).
- Generate program safety metrics and report system safety status to stakeholders.
- Contribute to continual safety process improvement and maintain a healthy system safety culture.
Requirements
Must-have technical experience, regulatory eligibility, and communication skills; preferred items list follows.
- Must-have: 5+ years engineering experience in development assurance involving complex electronic hardware; at least 2 years generating compliance claims to safety standards.
- Must-have: Strong foundation in system safety analysis and regulatory compliance (experience with PHAs, FHAs, FMECAs, FTAs, and DO-254 / MIL-STD-882 processes).
- Must-have: Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and in cross-disciplinary teams.
- Must-have: Eligible to work in the United States per export-control requirements (U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted refugee/asylee).
- Willingness to relocate (relocation assistance provided) and travel up to 20% as required.
- Preferred / Nice-to-have: Experience with integrated modular avionics systems safety; knowledge of FAA AC 20-152A; familiarity with STPA and academic foundations of software system safety; prior experience developing or auditing against IEC 61508, ISO 26262, or RTCA/DO-178C.
Education Requirements
B.Sc. in aerospace, electrical, systems engineering, or a related field is listed as the required degree.
