Job Title
Electrical/Optical SerDes Analog Mixed Signal Design Engineer
Role Summary
The Interconnect Solutions team designs next-generation electrical and optical transceivers for data-center, cloud, AI, and high-performance computing applications. This role focuses on analog and mixed-signal circuit design, electro-optic system modeling, and integration of silicon photonics into high-speed SerDes and optical links.
Work includes architecture evaluation, circuit design and verification, co-simulation with PIC designs, and collaboration with packaging, DSP, firmware, and test teams to transition silicon to production.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Significant experience in high-speed analog/mixed-signal design and electro-optic or silicon photonics systems is expected.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Architect and evaluate advanced high-speed SerDes and optical transceiver topologies (100G/lane PAM4 and beyond), including EIC/PIC partitioning and link-budget definition.
- Design and verify high-speed analog and mixed-signal circuits: modulator drivers, TIAs, front-end circuits, samplers, comparators, ADCs/DACs, PLLs, CDRs, clock distribution, heater drivers, bias DACs.
- Perform electro-optic system modeling and co-simulation with PIC designs; develop behavioral models of photonic devices in Verilog-A, MATLAB, or Python.
- Collaborate with package and SI/PI teams to define EIC-to-PIC interfaces, bump maps, and supply distribution for co-packaged and advanced packaging.
- Partner with DSP and algorithm teams on TX/RX equalization partitioning and link adaptation.
- Evaluate, measure, and debug silicon with firmware and test teams through bring-up, post-silicon validation, and production ramp.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- Solid background in high-speed analog CMOS circuit design in advanced process nodes.
- Good understanding of deep-submicron/FinFET process technology.
- Familiarity with serial links, wireline transceivers, or optical transceiver design and verification.
- Hands-on experience with silicon photonic devices or electro-optic transceivers (MRM, MZM, EAM, PD, grating couplers, heaters, lasers).
- Understanding of optical transceiver system metrics and impairments (OMA, ER, TDECQ, BER, FEC, RIN, shot noise, chirp, dispersion, optical nonlinearity).
- Proficiency with Cadence mixed-signal design and simulation flows.
- Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python for modeling and design automation.
- Ability to take ownership of technical tasks and work independently; strong communication skills.
Preferred:
- Experience developing behavioral or compact models of photonic devices in Verilog-A/Verilog-AMS.
- Experience with Lumerical tools (INTERCONNECT/FDTD/MODE).
- Exposure to co-packaged optics (CPO) or pluggable transceiver architectures and thermal/wavelength control loops.
- Experience with PIC-level design using foundry photonic PDKs and lab bring-up of high-speed electro-optic silicon.
Education Requirements
MS or above in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field; PhD preferred.
