Electrical Engineer
CACI InternationalJob Title
Electrical Engineer
Role Summary
Design, develop, and evaluate analog/digital electronic hardware, printed circuit boards, and FPGA-based solutions for embedded systems. Work with FPGA logic (VHDL/Verilog), embedded firmware, and lab characterization to support system integration and technical reporting.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The posting does not specify years of experience.
Responsibilities
Perform hardware and firmware development, test, and analysis to support electronic systems and FPGA integration.
- Characterize electronic systems and components; produce schematics, PCB layouts, HDL block diagrams, and firmware documentation.
- Analyze analog and mixed-signal circuits, measuring gain, bandwidth, noise, linearity, and other performance metrics.
- Work with digital communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, PCIe, Ethernet) and implement/debug interfaces in FPGA or firmware.
- Design FPGA logic using VHDL/Verilog; perform synthesis, place-and-route, timing closure, simulation, and verification.
- Develop embedded firmware (C/C++) for soft-core and embedded processors; implement device drivers and HAL layers.
- Characterize RF and analog signals and support DSP/modulation implementations in FPGA when applicable.
- Prepare technical reports and briefings integrating device, PCB, FPGA, and firmware analysis.
- Research emerging electronic, FPGA, and embedded technologies and collaborate with subject-matter experts to solve hardware problems.
- Travel domestically as required (up to 10%).
Requirements
Key skills and qualifications required and preferred for successful performance in this role.
Must-have:
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance.
- Proficiency reading and interpreting electronic schematics, PCB layouts, FPGA block diagrams, and firmware architectures.
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment: oscilloscopes, spectrum/logic analyzers, signal generators, multimeters, and power supplies.
- Experience programming FPGAs in VHDL or Verilog and developing embedded firmware in C/C++.
- Experience implementing and debugging common bus protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, PCIe, Ethernet) in HDL or firmware.
- Ability to produce complex technical reports describing hardware, PCB, FPGA, and firmware analyses.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with FPGA toolchains (Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, Microchip Libero) and simulation/verification tools (ModelSim, Vivado Simulator).
- Familiarity with soft-core processors (NIOS II, MicroBlaze, Mi-V RISC-V) and debugging tools (JTAG, in-circuit debuggers).
- Knowledge of DSP concepts, RF simulation tools (ADS, AWR, HFSS), or analog circuit simulation (SPICE, LTspice).
- Proficiency with scripting for test automation (Python, TCL, MATLAB) and version control for HDL/firmware (Git, SVN).
- Familiarity with PCB design tools (Altium, Siemens/Mentor) and PCB design principles.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
