Job Title

Electrical Design Engineer - FPGA & PCB Design

Role Summary

Design and validate FPGA and PCB subsystems used in semiconductor inspection equipment. Work within a multidisciplinary product development team (Surfscan/Global Products Group) to define requirements, prototype hardware, and integrate electronics into production-ready systems.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Typical candidates have multiple years of hands-on industry experience (see Education Requirements for degree-specific minimum experience).

Responsibilities

Principal responsibilities include design, verification, and integration of FPGA and PCB hardware for high-speed data acquisition and processing systems.

  • Define electrical subsystem requirements, specifications, and interfaces from system requirements.
  • Design and prototype analog and digital circuits; capture schematics and direct PCB layout.
  • Design, implement, verify, and optimize high-speed FPGA designs for data acquisition, processing, and communications.
  • Develop test fixtures, procedures, and scripts for prototype PCB and FPGA functional tests, qualification, and characterization.
  • Perform circuit, signal integrity, timing, thermal, power, and FPGA simulations to validate designs.
  • Participate in PCB and FPGA design reviews and provide technical feedback.
  • Integrate and debug hardware at bench, subsystem, and system levels; troubleshoot complex instrumentation systems.
  • Produce and maintain design documentation, test reports, and engineering release packages for manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, systems, and manufacturing engineers for product integration and validation.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for successful performance in this role.

  • Strong foundation in electrical engineering principles and mixed-signal electronics (theory and practical implementation).
  • Experience with PCB design and high-speed digital hardware design, including FPGA and embedded processor development.
  • FPGA development experience on Xilinx or Intel (Altera) platforms, including Verilog and/or VHDL design, simulation, synthesis, implementation, and debugging.
  • Solid understanding of FPGA-to-PCB interface design, timing analysis, timing closure, and constraint development.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware/firmware integration, debug, and system-level testing of prototype hardware.
  • Familiarity with tools such as OrCAD, Xilinx Vivado/ISE, Intel Quartus, Synplify, Questa/ModelSim, Python, and MATLAB.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to troubleshoot complex equipment and instrumentation systems.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; demonstrates ownership and accountability.

Education Requirements

Minimum qualifications state: BSEE with 3+ years of relevant experience, MSEE with 2+ years, or PhD in Electrical Engineering with 1+ year of experience. Degree field specified: Electrical Engineering.
