Job Title

Electrical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Design and verify electrical subsystems for KLA's Surfscan metrology and inspection products. Work on analog and digital mixed-signal circuits, PCB prototypes, and high-speed FPGA designs to support data acquisition, processing, and product integration.

Collaborate with mechanical, software, systems, manufacturing, and service teams to support product introduction, production ramp-up, and field issue resolution.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Posting indicates a typical background of BSEE with ~1+ years experience or an advanced degree.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include design, verification, and support of electrical subsystems and FPGA solutions for wafer inspection equipment.

  • Define electrical subsystem requirements, specifications, and interfaces from system requirements.
  • Design and prototype analog and digital circuits; capture schematics and direct PCB layout.
  • Design, implement, verify, and optimize high-speed FPGA designs for data acquisition, processing, and communications.
  • Develop test fixtures, procedures, and scripts for PCB and FPGA functional tests, qualification, and characterization.
  • Perform circuit, signal-integrity, timing, thermal, power, and FPGA simulations to validate designs.
  • Participate in PCB and FPGA design reviews and provide technical feedback.
  • Generate and maintain design documentation, test reports, and engineering release packages for manufacturing (DFX process).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful product integration and validation.
  • Support product introduction, production ramp-up, and resolve field issues with manufacturing and service organizations.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and competencies for successful performance in this role.

  • Strong foundation in electrical engineering principles and practical analog/digital mixed-signal electronics design.
  • Proven FPGA development experience on Xilinx or Intel (Altera) platforms using Verilog and/or VHDL, including simulation, synthesis, implementation, and debugging.
  • Solid understanding of FPGA-to-PCB interface design, timing analysis, timing closure, and constraints development.
  • Experience with circuit, signal-integrity, timing, thermal, power, and FPGA simulation tools.
  • Familiarity with engineering tools such as OrCAD, Xilinx Vivado/ISE, Intel Quartus, Synplify, Questa/ModelSim, Python, and MATLAB.
  • Experience developing test fixtures, test procedures, and automated test scripts for board and FPGA validation.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for complex instrumentation and semiconductor equipment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; demonstrated ownership and accountability.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with AI-assisted circuit design or AI tools for FPGA design and review.

Education Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) plus approximately 1+ years of related experience, or a Master of Science (MSEE) or PhD in Electrical Engineering.
