Director, Software Quality Engineering
D MatrixJob Title
Director, Software Quality Engineering
Role Summary
Lead the Software Quality Engineering team that ensures the d-Matrix stack (firmware, compiler, runtime, and inference serving) works automatically, continuously, and with measurable evidence. This is a hands-on director role responsible for resetting strategy, driving automation-first testing, and delivering coverage and release gates that engineering trusts.
Experience Level
Senior - Director-level leadership. Source does not specify years of experience.
Responsibilities
Own strategy, tooling, automation, and team execution for quality across firmware, compiler/runtime, and inference serving.
- Define and execute a quality strategy spanning firmware, compiler/runtime, and serving, with tiered test plans (unit, simulated, single-/multi-card, rack).
- Design and deliver test frameworks and harnesses for reuse across layers.
- Build and maintain automated functional, integration, and end-to-end test suites from firmware through serving deployments.
- Implement numerical accuracy regression detection and tolerance-aware reference comparisons.
- Implement performance regression detection and benchmarking hygiene.
- Define measurable release readiness criteria and quality gates.
- Run defect triage, escape analysis, and quality metrics that the organization uses for decisions.
- Lead, grow, and hire for a team of eight, setting standards for how engineering tests their work.
Requirements
Required skills and experience to perform the role; preferred items listed separately.
- Must-have: Experience leading a software quality or test engineering team while remaining hands-on (writing and reviewing framework code).
- Must-have: Proven success taking over an existing team and changing direction, including upskilling existing engineers.
- Must-have: Strong programming ability in Python and/or C++ and experience building test frameworks.
- Must-have: Systems software testing experience (firmware, compilers, runtimes, drivers, distributed systems) and testing without a UI.
- Must-have: Experience with hardware and software integration testing and its failure modes.
- Must-have: Ability to design test strategy under constrained resources and to integrate suites into CI with promotion/release gates.
- Nice-to-have: ML/inference domain knowledge (quantization, numerics, model accuracy evaluation).
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with inference serving stacks, Kubernetes-based test environments, hardware-in-the-loop testing, lab automation, or practical experience applying AI to test generation/triage.
Education Requirements
Not specified.
