Digital Design (Physical) Engineer
Analog DevicesJob Title
Digital Design (Physical) Engineer
Role Summary
Work on RTL-to-GDSII physical implementation for digital and mixed-signal products under guidance from experienced engineers. Tasks include floorplanning, placement, CTS, routing, timing closure, verification, and silicon debug support.
This is a graduate / early-career engineering role within Analog Devices' digital implementation team focused on production designs and flow automation.
Experience Level
Entry-level (Graduate). Suitable for recent graduates and engineers with internship or project experience in digital physical implementation; typically 0β3 years of experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include hands-on physical design tasks, verification, and cross-team collaboration.
- Perform floorplanning, power planning, placement, clock tree synthesis (CTS), and routing as part of the RTL-to-GDSII flow under senior guidance.
- Run static timing analysis (STA) across PVT corners in MCMM setups and help resolve setup/hold violations with design and layout teams.
- Support power integrity work including IR-drop and electromigration (EM) analysis.
- Execute physical verification checks (DRC, LVS, antenna, ERC) and drive issues to clean signoff.
- Collaborate with analog layout engineers on mixed-signal floorplan co-optimization and constraints.
- Support DFT activities such as scan chain stitching and ATPG pattern generation.
- Script and automate repetitive physical design tasks to improve flow (Tcl/Python/shell).
- Provide silicon bring-up and debug support, correlating physical design decisions with lab measurements.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for successful performance in this role.
- Solid understanding of digital logic, CMOS fundamentals, and the IC design flow.
- Working knowledge of static timing analysis concepts, setup/hold, and clock domain crossing (CDC).
- Practical exposure to digital implementation tools or flows (e.g., Cadence Genus/Innovus/Tempus or equivalent) via coursework, internship, or project experience.
- Scripting ability in Tcl, Python, or shell to automate tasks.
- Methodical engineering approach with attention to tracking and closing many small issues to zero.
- Strong teamwork skills and sufficient English for daily technical communication and documentation.
Nice-to-have:
- Tape-out experience from a university project or internship.
- Exposure to power analysis (IR-drop, EM) or power intent (UPF/CPF).
- Familiarity with DFT methodologies (scan insertion, ATPG, JTAG/boundary scan).
- Experience with both mature analog process nodes (e.g., 180nm BCD) and advanced digital nodes.
- Experience using AI tools to improve flow development or engineering productivity.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Microelectronics, or a related technical field is preferred; a Master's is listed as preferred. Equivalent practical experience (tape-out projects, internships, relevant coursework) is also considered.
