Job Title
DFM R&D Engineer — Advanced Simulation & Materials
Role Summary
The role combines finite element simulation and hands-on materials characterization to develop predictive models for semiconductor packaging, PCB systems, and SMT assemblies. The engineer will drive simulation-to-hardware correlation, influence design and reliability decisions, and partner with design, reliability, and manufacturing teams.
Experience Level
Senior — requires significant practical experience; posting specifies 7+ years of experience in finite element modeling.
Responsibilities
Deliver simulation-driven analysis and experimental correlation to reduce mechanical risk and inform product and manufacturing decisions.
- Develop and execute finite element models (implicit and explicit) for semiconductor packaging, PCB structures, and SMT assemblies.
- Analyze thermo-mechanical behavior including warpage, stress evolution, drop/shock, fatigue, and fracture.
- Lead or support material characterization (mechanical, physical, chemical) for microelectronics materials.
- Build, calibrate, and validate material models using experimental data.
- Design and execute DOE to correlate simulation with test results and support reliability projections.
- Drive early design optimization and support root-cause investigations of mechanical failures.
- Integrate module-level simulations into larger product assembly models and communicate results to cross-functional stakeholders.
Requirements
Required and preferred technical skills and domain experience.
-
Must-have: 7+ years of finite element modeling experience; strong foundation in solid mechanics and thermomechanics.
-
Must-have: Experience with CAE tools such as Ansys, Abaqus, or equivalent.
-
Must-have: Experience working with materials used in microelectronics applications; hands-on materials characterization and model calibration.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience in warpage, fracture mechanics, fatigue, or drop/impact modeling.
-
Nice-to-have: Familiarity with semiconductor packaging and SMT processes and experience correlating simulation with physical testing.
-
Nice-to-have: Understanding of DOE methodology and reliability physics; strong written and verbal communication skills.
Education Requirements
MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Mechanics, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (as stated in the posting).
