Device Engineering Intern, Silicon Photonics (Summer 2027)
GlobalFoundriesJob Title
Device Engineering Intern, Silicon Photonics (Summer 2027)
Role Summary
Support development and qualification of silicon photonic devices for high-speed optical interconnect and sensing (45nm and beyond). Work with Device Engineering to analyze process, electrical, and optical measurement data to identify opportunities to improve device performance, variability, and manufacturability. This is an internship role with mentorship and professional development components.
Experience Level
Entry-level (Internship). Candidates must be current students (at least a sophomore at time of application) enrolled in an accredited degree program.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities focus on data analysis, process evaluation, and enabling test/measurement improvements for silicon photonic devices.
- Analyze in-line process, electrical, and optical measurement trends for silicon photonic devices.
- Support evaluation of process or device-design improvements to reduce variability and improve optical/electrical performance.
- Identify measurements that better predict final device figures of merit and enable updated tests for new test structures.
- Perform data mining, correlation, and statistical analysis across process, electrical, and optical datasets; document methods and communicate findings in technical reviews.
- Perform all work in a safe and responsible manner and follow Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.
Requirements
Must-have and preferred qualifications summarized below.
- Must-have: English fluency (written and verbal); ability to work at least 40 hours per week during the internship; currently enrolled and available for the internship period. (See Education Requirements for degree and GPA expectations.)
- Nice-to-have: prior related internship or co-op experience; leadership experience; interest in leveraging AI tools and emerging technologies; project management and problem-solving skills; strong written and verbal communication; planning and organizational skills; coursework, research, or project experience in silicon photonics, photonic device physics, semiconductor processing, or optoelectronic characterization; experience analyzing electrical, optical, or semiconductor manufacturing data; scripting/coding in Python or R; familiarity with statistical analysis, data visualization, Design of Experiments, or Statistical Process Control.
Education Requirements
At least a sophomore at time of application and actively pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Materials Engineering, Photonics, Optics, Physics, or a related technical field through an accredited program. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and in good academic standing.
