Design Application Engineer

Role Summary

The Design Application Engineer provides technical leadership for customer design enablement and supports semiconductor design implementation across GlobalFoundries technologies. The role drives customer success, resolves complex technical issues, and develops scalable engineering solutions from initial engagement through tape-out readiness.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Typical candidates have 1–4+ years of relevant experience depending on degree (see Education Requirements).

Responsibilities

Own technical delivery and customer enablement across assigned customers, platforms, or engineering workstreams.

• Lead technical execution for assigned customers and design projects through tape-out readiness.
• Coordinate solutions across PDK, modeling, IP, EDA, reliability, product engineering, quality, and sales.
• Resolve complex technical problems via root-cause analysis, risk assessment, and corrective actions.
• Develop and improve reusable design flows, automation, case management, and support infrastructure.
• Manage scope, deliverables, milestones, dependencies, risks, and recovery plans.
• Create technical documentation: application notes, troubleshooting guides, reference flows, and procedures.
• Provide technical leadership in design and case reviews, customer engagements, and cross-functional forums.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience.

• Demonstrated expertise in application engineering disciplines such as IC design methodology, EDA tools, and design enablement.
• Proven ability to independently solve complex technical problems and deliver customer-focused solutions.
• Experience leading or contributing to projects from initiation through completion; able to manage technical scope and schedules.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills; able to coordinate across engineering and customer teams.
• Track record improving engineering methods, standards, and reusable solutions.
• Ability to provide technical guidance and mentoring to peers.
• Comfort evaluating emerging technologies, design methodologies, and EDA tool capabilities to recommend adoption.
• Nice-to-have: Familiarity with semiconductor design flows, PDKs, EDA tools, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Dynamics, and productivity/collaboration tools.

Education Requirements

One of the following: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline with 4+ years relevant experience; OR Master's degree with 2+ years relevant experience; OR PhD with 1+ years relevant experience.
