CPU Formal Verification Engineer
QualcommJob Title
CPU Formal Verification Engineer
Role Summary
Join Qualcomm's CPU engineering team to apply formal methods to verification of application processors. The role focuses on defining formal verification architectures, creating end-to-end formal sign-off environments, and deploying model-checking and theorem-proving techniques across CPU components.
Experience Level
Mid-level. The posting lists a range of acceptable experience: minimums as low as 1β2 years with advanced degrees and 2+ years with a bachelor's, while preferred profiles reference ~4+ years for MS/PhD and 8+ years for some BA/BS-level candidates.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include planning and executing formal verification activities and integrating formal flows into CPU sign-off.
- Collaborate with CPU designers to capture design intent and create verification plans and schedules focused on architecture-to-microarchitecture refinement.
- Define formal verification architecture and build end-to-end formal sign-off environments for CPU components.
- Create and manage formal test plans, properties, and proofs for complex hardware designs.
- Deploy model-checking and theorem-proving techniques, including property verification, mathematical proofs, and architectural modeling/validation.
- Automate verification flows and integrate formal tools into the verification infrastructure.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; education requirements are summarized separately below.
- Strong background in model checking or theorem proving applied to complex systems.
- Experience writing assertions and associated modeling code in Hardware Description Languages or proving correctness of architectural specifications using formal methods.
- Familiarity with formal tools such as JasperGold, VC-Formal, ACL2, or HOL.
- Strong software engineering skills with experience in automation and proficiency in at least one programming language (C++, Python, TCL, etc.).
- Domain knowledge in microprocessor architecture/micro-architecture, instruction set architecture, floating-point math, memory consistency/coherency, and security architectures is highly desirable.
Education Requirements
The posting references BA/BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field. It specifies experience expectations linked to degree level (examples cited: BA/BS +8+ years; MS/PhD with 4+ years; minimum qualifications listing BS +2+ years, MS +1+ year, or PhD). Equivalent technical experience is presented via degree/experience alternatives.
