Job Title

CPU Architecture Performance Engineer (Multiple Levels)

Role Summary

Lead performance verification of custom multi-core CPU designs for mobile and portable computers. Collaborate with CPU design and performance teams to validate new features, compare RTL to performance models, and troubleshoot performance regressions.

Experience Level

Mid-level (typical 3–7 years of relevant engineering experience). Multiple levels considered depending on candidate qualifications.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Analyze and verify CPU microarchitecture performance across fetch, decode, branch prediction, renaming, execution units, SIMD, load/store, MMU, caches, retire, and related subsystems.
  • Validate performance features by comparing RTL results to performance models and identify discrepancies.
  • Develop test cases and workloads with design and performance teams to exercise and validate new features.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues and perform root-cause analysis in simulation and modeling environments.
  • Run and interpret common performance benchmarks and workloads; document findings and recommendations.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience:

  • Strong CPU architecture and microarchitecture knowledge across core pipeline stages and execution units.
  • Experience in RTL simulation environments and performance modeling workflows.
  • Proficiency in Verilog, C, C++, and scripting languages such as Python or Perl.
  • Experience creating and validating performance test cases and using performance benchmarks and workloads.
  • Effective problem-solving and debugging skills for performance verification.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with SIMD implementations, MMU tuning, or specific performance modeling tools.
  • Familiarity with low-power or mobile CPU design constraints.

Education Requirements

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field + 4+ years relevant engineering experience; OR Master's degree in those fields + 3+ years; OR PhD + 2+ years. Preferred: MS in Computer Architecture with several years of practical experience. Related fields and equivalent practical experience are accepted per the posted minimums.
