Control and Test Engineer
Xscape PhotonicsJob Title
Control and Test Engineer
Role Summary
Develop, implement, and validate control algorithms and test procedures for integrated photonic circuits to ensure stable optical performance. Work closely with photonics, hardware, and firmware teams to model systems, execute validation tests, and analyze measurement data.
Experience Level
Mid-level. See Education Requirements for specific years-of-experience guidance.
Responsibilities
Primary technical responsibilities for this role include:
- Design and implement test plans, scripts, methodologies, and protocols for control-system validation.
- Develop control algorithms for initialization and stabilization of photonic components (lasers, ring modulators, MZI multiplexers/demultiplexers, ring filters).
- Implement and coordinate multiple control loops across photonic subsystems, integrating with hardware and firmware.
- Perform rigorous validation tests to assess signal quality and system performance under varied environmental conditions.
- Automate test execution and equipment control using scripting to run lab equipment and custom hardware.
- Analyze measurement data and produce statistical visualizations to extract actionable insights.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and improve product designs.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Strong knowledge of control theory and practical implementation (including PID and signal-processing techniques).
- Experience with optical test equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers, power meters, and interferometers.
- Proficient scripting skills (Python or similar) for test automation and equipment control.
- In-depth knowledge of photonic components and systems: lasers, optical amplifiers, modulators, filters, and photodetectors.
- Familiarity with optical simulation and modeling tools for system design and analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and effective communication in cross-functional teams.
Nice-to-have:
- Hands-on experience with printed circuit boards and embedded firmware.
Education Requirements
Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of industry experience, OR PhD in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of industry experience.
