Compiler Engineering Intern
Intel CorporationJob Title
Compiler Engineering Intern
Role Summary
Work as an intern on Intel's compiler engineering team to design, implement, test, and analyze compiler and runtime features that connect hardware capabilities to software ecosystems for AI, HPC, and other performance-critical workloads. You will collaborate with engineers on LLVM-based toolchains, runtimes, and developer tooling and contribute to code, tests, and documentation.
Experience Level
Entry-level (Internship). Intended for current Bachelor’s or Master’s students or equivalent graduate-level researchers; this role expects graduate-level technical depth for project work.
Responsibilities
Typical project work and team activities include:
- Design, implement, test, and analyze compiler or runtime features (front end, IR, optimizations, code generation, runtimes, debug info).
- Develop and debug C/C++ software within a large collaborative codebase.
- Create or improve tests, reproduce defects, and analyze failures to deliver reliable fixes or prototypes.
- Evaluate functional correctness, compile-time behavior, runtime performance, and code quality for assigned work.
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and project planning with mentors and team members.
- Document designs, experiments, results, and present project outcomes to the team; contribute to open-source projects when aligned with the assignment.
Requirements
Concise list of must-have and nice-to-have technical qualifications.
- Must-have: Proficiency programming in C or C++ and experience working with complex software systems.
- Must-have: Experience designing experiments, analyzing technical results, and communicating conclusions in writing and verbally.
- Must-have: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills; ability to work independently on scoped tasks and collaborate with team members.
- Nice-to-have: Hands-on experience with LLVM or related compiler infrastructure (front-end, IR, optimization passes, codegen, runtimes, debug info).
- Nice-to-have: Experience with heterogeneous/CPU+GPU architectures, AI/ML compilation, Triton, MLIR, Clang, SYCL/DPC++, CUDA, OpenMP, or parallel programming and performance optimization.
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with AI frameworks (e.g., PyTorch), inference engines, GPU kernel programming, open-source contributions, or prior publications/technical reports.
Education Requirements
Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical discipline. Graduate-level coursework, research, or project experience in compilers, programming languages, computer architecture, parallel computing, or systems software is expected.
