Job Title

Compiler Engineering Graduate Intern

Role Summary

Contribute to Intel's LLVM-based compiler stack for CPUs and GPUs. Work on compiler features, MLIR-based representations, DSLs (e.g. Triton), optimization, code generation, runtimes/offload support, debug information, testing infrastructure, performance analysis, and developer tooling. Collaborate with hardware architects, AI framework teams, and open-source communities on an engineering or research project that delivers a prototype or production-quality solution.

Experience Level

Entry-level - graduate internship intended for Master's or PhD students. No specific years of professional experience required; role expects graduate-level coursework, research, or project experience.

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities for the internship project include:

  • Design, implement, test, or analyze compiler and runtime technologies.
  • Develop and debug C/C++ code within a large, collaborative codebase.
  • Create or improve tests, reproduce defects, and analyze failures.
  • Evaluate functional correctness, compile-time behavior, runtime performance, or code quality.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and project planning with mentors.
  • Document experiments, results, and lessons learned and present outcomes to the team.
  • Contribute to open-source projects when aligned with the assigned work.

Requirements

Concise list of must-have and preferred qualifications.

  • Must-have: Experience programming in C or C++ and working with complex software systems.
  • Must-have: Experience designing experiments, analyzing technical results, and communicating conclusions.
  • Must-have: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills; clear written and verbal communication; ability to work independently on scoped tasks.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with LLVM, MLIR, Clang, Flang, SYCL/DPC++, Triton, OpenMP, CUDA, or other compiler / parallel-programming ecosystems.
  • Preferred: Hands-on experience with compiler infrastructure (front-end development, IRs, optimization passes, code generation, runtimes, or debug information).
  • Preferred: Research or development experience with CPU/GPU architectures, heterogeneous computing, AI/ML compilation, HPC, parallel programming, or performance optimization.
  • Preferred: Experience with AI frameworks (e.g. PyTorch), inference engines, GPU compute kernel writing, tile-based programming models, or contributing to open-source projects.
  • Preferred: Publications, technical reports, patents, or other evidence of advanced technical work.

Education Requirements

Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical discipline. Graduate-level coursework, research, or project experience in compilers, programming languages, computer architecture, parallel computing, or systems software is expected.
