Role Summary

Join NVIDIA's GPU Software Compiler team to develop and improve the backend that emits high-performance GPU machine instructions for Graphics and Compute workloads. The team focuses on register allocation, instruction scheduling, and other code-generation optimizations for parallel SIMT architectures.

Experience Level

Entry-level (New college graduate). Suitable for recent B.S./M.S./PhD graduates or candidates with equivalent practical experience; typically 0–2 years.

Responsibilities

Primary engineering responsibilities on the compiler backend include:

  • Understand, modify, and improve NVIDIA's GPU compiler backend implemented in C++.
  • Design and implement register allocation passes and backend optimizations to improve performance and robustness.
  • Collaborate with compiler, hardware, and application teams to diagnose issues and deliver fixes.
  • Contribute to compiler infrastructure used across deep-learning and graphics toolchains.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and attributes:

  • Compiler code-generation experience (preferably with LLVM).
  • Proficient hands-on C++ programming skills.
  • Strong software engineering practices focused on robust, maintainable solutions.
  • Good communication and documentation skills; self-motivated.

Nice-to-have:

  • Significant academic compiler project or thesis work.
  • Familiarity with LLVM code-generation components (instruction scheduling, software pipelining, register allocation, GlobalISel, TableGen, LLVM IR, Machine IR).
  • Experience with compiler unit testing, IRs, and IR visualization.

Education Requirements

B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. (or equivalent practical experience). M.S. or Ph.D. highly desired. No specific field of study was listed in the posting.
