CMP Shift Engineer, Manufacturing Development Engineering
Micron TechnologyJob Title
CMP Shift Engineer, Manufacturing Development Engineering
Role Summary
The CMP Shift Engineer performs technical development work for CMP (chemical mechanical planarization) under a 24/7 shift operation at a fabrication site, collaborating with process development, process integration, and production teams. The role focuses on maintaining continuous development activity, rapid response to process issues, and supporting device development and redundancy tool deployment.
Experience Level
Entry / Early Career. Suitable for candidates with early-career experience in semiconductor process or production environments.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include hands-on CMP process development and shift-based engineering support in a continuous-operation fab environment.
- Provide 24/7 technical development support for CMP area under a four-on/four-off shift schedule.
- Act as Level Owner for development devices: process setup, process improvement evaluation, SPC management, and tasks defined by PMI.
- Lead evaluation of new CMP tools and new materials; perform and assess delamination (peel-off) inspections related to material introductions.
- Diagnose and respond rapidly to CMP process abnormalities and thickness measurement errors to enable timely lot release.
- Collect, analyze, and summarize process data for chronic issues and escalate findings to process development or process integration teams.
- Drive cycle-time improvement for development lots through redundancy tool deployment and alignment with production processes.
- Coordinate with production engineers and equipment engineers to integrate development activity into manufacturing constraints.
- Use data analysis (including AI-assisted tools where applicable) to support troubleshooting and process improvement initiatives.
- Work scheduled shifts: Day 08:00β20:15 (actual 10h30m, 105 min break) and Night 20:00β08:15 (actual 10h15m, 120 min break).
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and behavioral expectations; candidates are not required to satisfy every item listed.
- Must-have (technical): basic semiconductor process knowledge; ability to perform process-related troubleshooting; proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word); ability to extract data, format reports, and present results.
- Language: Japanese proficiency equivalent to JLPT N2 or business level for daily operations; ability to handle English emails and documents or use translation tools as needed.
- Shift work: ability to work a 4-on/4-off shift schedule as described.
- Interpersonal: teamwork for improvement activities, adherence to workplace rules, clear reporting/communication, and proactive attitude with self-management.
- Analytical: ability to collect and summarize data and escalate appropriately; use of data analysis tools for continuous improvement.
- Nice-to-have: prior CMP process engineering experience; familiarity with redundancy tool deployment in a development/production environment.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or higher, or at least 2 years of practical experience in the semiconductor industry or production line; equivalent practical experience will be considered.
